ASHA and State Speech Therapy CEU Requirements

As speech therapist we have to maintain CEU hours through ASHA and the state we practice in to keep our knowledge relevant with evidence based practice. CEU hours is also known as professional development hours.

Many speech therapist don’t know you can gain CEU hours in many ways, for example

  • Continuing education activities
  • Employer sponsored in service activities
  • Business and management content
  • Teacher orientated content
  • College or university course work

ASHA CEU Requirements

Every certificate holder is assigned a 3-year certification maintenance interval with 30 required PDHs. The 3-year certification maintenance interval begins the first January following the date certification was awarded. 

Required out of ASHA CEU 30 required hours

  • 1 hour must be in the area of ethics
  • 2 hours must be in cultural competency, cultural humility, culturally responsive practice, diversity, equity, inclusion

ASHA Compliance Forms

  • A compliance form must be turned into ASHA by December 31st at the end of your interval or anytime before
  • ASHA CEU’s can be tracked online on your ASHA account for a price or ASHA provides a Record Keeping Form
  • Always keep records from completed courses and record forms for 5 years in case of an audit of proof of CEU’s

If your state does not provide a way to keep a record of CEU’s I have attached one at the bottom of this paragraph. If your state does not specify how long to keep records for, I suggest keeping certificates and records for at least 4 years past each cycle. Starting a new folder on your computer for CEU’s is a great way to stay organized.
